Let’s face it. After a hard day of filling cavities or preparing tax returns or dealing with angry customers, who wants to come home and read how SEO can increase response rates 22%, or the effect of inventory control on your bottom line, or 22 accounting secrets every business must know?
No one, that’s who.
Instead, the typical American goes online to connect with friends or watch Netflix movies or peek at naughty photos.
As a rule we prefer Lady Gaga over the First Lady.
See for yourself.
According to twittercounter.com, http://twittercounter.com/pages/100?utm_expid=102679131-65.MDYnsQdXQwO2AlKoJXVpSQ.0 the 5 people with the most followers on Twitter are:
- Katy Perry (78.3 million)
- Justin Bieber (70.5
- Taylor Swift (66.7 million)
- Barack Obama 66.5 million)
- Rihanna (53.1 million)
Notice there’s no one from the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Scientific American, Atlantic Monthly or Mad magazine.
The all-time top 5 videos on YouTube, according to Independent http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/most-viewed-youtube-videos-from-gangnam-style-to-wrecking-ball-9607483.html are:
- Psy—Gangnam Style (2.3 billion views)
- Justin Bieber—Baby (1.2 billion views)
- Katy Perry—Dark Horse (884 million views)
- Katy Perry—Roar (889 million views)
- LMFAO—Party Rock Anthem (855 million views)
No TED talks. No politics, economics, science, health or business videos.
What’s the moral of this story?
If you think the way to blog or tweet or pin your way to business success is to write “7 Ways to Use SEO Before Building Your Website” or to produce YouTube videos explaining marketing strategies to dominate and crush your competition…you’re in for some serious disappointments my friend.
Instead, post a YouTube video with dancing accountants singing the praises of your new financial software. Or show your engineers base jumping off tall buildings to promote your enhanced safety program. Or produce a steamy mini soap opera dramatizing how your drug cures Hep C.
And then—Baroooom! Your blog, website or fan page will skyrocket to the top of the charts.
